The story takes place in September 1998 in a Midwestern town called Raccoon City United States, where a multinational organization called Umbrella Corporation is shown as a conglomerate that has branches of research, development and trade of all goods and services there, but is actually a cover for developing and selling industry, especially biological weapons, the latest technology.
The story begins when a wave of bizarre murders begins to occur near the city. Several hikers were found dead in nearby points, partially eaten, although it is not that animal has been responsible for such atrocities. To prevent panic fester in the city, the police department decides to send the Stars, a division of the best officers specially trained for the work of rescue and survival, to thoroughly investigate the case.
Deliveries begin during or after the initial large destructive wave. In this situation the main character, Claire Redfield or Leon usually S. Kennedy, must survive and find a way to escape while dealing with zombies and monsters are not born only contact with the dead, but of others who have escaped from the laboratory to develop biological weapons Umbrella. The context under which the story unfolds only glimpsed as the game progresses, the different characters and places you visit the player provide clues about what happened to the people and what they should do.
